What is Xylitol?
Xylitol is a Sweetener substitute most often associated with “sugar-free” chewing gum and mints, it’s also found in plenty of other places, including some brands of peanut butter, toothpastes, certain medications and vitamins, many sugar-free products.
Xylitol is monosaccharide compound, which is gained by hydrolyzing plant fiber raw materials and then reduced to a linear polyol with 5 carbon atoms and 5 hydroxyl groups. It exist in bananas, strawberries, carrots, arbutus, onions, lettuce, cauliflower, spinach and mushrooms. Sweetness, calorific value of xylitol is similar to sucrose. It is a good substitute for patients of fasting sucrose. The metabolism of xylitol does not need insulin in the body and does not increase the level of blood sugar.
